New Desktop PC – Lenovo ThinkCentre M75q

Recently, due to some arrangements at home, I went from the basement, to a bedroom on the top floor. Doing so I decided to clean up and minimize my PC layout. Something I have been wanting to do for awhile, just never made the time. Well, when things at home changed, it made me do it. And I am happy for it. I like the change.

My previous PC I built back in 2015, was an Intel i5 4590, with 16 GB of ram and 250GB SSD running Windows 7, then Windows 10. I From May 2016, until October 2021, I used 4 BenQ GW2265 (1080p) monitors. Those 4 monitors were very nice to have. It gave me a lot of space to have open at one time. I primarily work in Google Chrome all day, so I had 4 Chrome browsers open (one on each monitor) and each Chrome browser would have 4 to 10 tabs in them. It’s how I did business for 5 1/2 years. No complaints.

For the last 2 or 3 years, I have slowly noticed my PC is getting a little slower. Windows 10 needed more resources to run than Windows 7 did. So I have been thinking about upgrading, but just wasn’t sure what I wanted. I knew I was interested in something smaller and less cluttered. My PC’s have always been against the wall, so you could never really see the mess of cables back there. And with 4 monitors, you got a lot of cables. And yes, my cable management…did not exist I know, cringe. But I did not care.

Last year, I was looking at building a small form factor PC. But I needed something to support my 4 monitors. Swapping out the 4 monitors for one larger one never crossed my mind. When I last checked, one 4K monitor was twice the price of my 4 1080p screens, back in 2016. My wife suggested I look at them again as friends of ours recently bought one. So I checked out local computer store, and found a 32″ BenQ 4K monitor on sale. The resolution was perfect, 3,840 x 2,160. This gives me 4 1080p sections on one screen.

So I went out and bought it, hooked it up to my old i5 PC. (Running an old nvidia 750Ti). It did not take me long to fall in love with this monitor. I got the BenQ EW3270U. Here I also discovered Windows 10 task view. I always had it off with my 4 monitors. But with one large screen, it is something I use all the time. I will now have 4 taskview desktop. Each desktop for its own purpose. (Love it).

Now that I have a awesome new monitor, with VESA mount on the back (key feature for me). I needed a new PC. I knew at this point I wanted a small form factor PC. The question was do I build it, like all other PC’s I have done ever since earlier 90s or look for a brand name one. (fyi, i have never bought a name brand PC. I always built my own).

While adding the cost for a custom build small form factor PC it was adding up fast, and that did not include the Window 10 lic. So I checked out some brand name small form factor PCs. That’s when i came across the Lenovo ThinkCentre M75q. I also found it at the same place where I bought my monitor, and it was on sale as well. Watched some YouTube reviews on it, and it was good. So I got that as well. Set it up, (mounted to back of the monitor…sweet) and away I went.

Overall, I am very happy with this little PC. Very small, very quiet, very fast (compared to my i5 4590)

The specs on the Lenovo ThinkCentre M75q are..

  • Processor AMD Ryzen™ 5 Pro 4650GE Processor (3.30 GHz, up to 4.20 GHz Max Boost, 6 Cores, 12 Threads, 8 MB Cache)
  • Operating System Windows 10 Pro 64 (Upgraded to Windows 11)
  • Memory 8 GB DDR4 3200MHz (I upgrade to 16 GB)
  • Hard Drive 250 GB PCIe SSD M.2 Drive
  • Graphics Integrated AMD Radeon™ Graphics
  • WiFi Wireless LAN AdaptersIntel® Wi-Fi 6 AX200 802.11AX (2 x 2) & Bluetooth® 5.1

It came with a wired keyboard and mouse, but I just used my current Microsoft wireless keyboard and mouse. I also hooked up my Logitech Brio camera. So as of now, I got a nice minmal PC and a clean desktop layout.

I got just 3 cables now running up to the PC. Power cable for monitor, PC, and the LAN cable. Iwas using the wireless for about 2 weeks. Because I am far from the Wifi/Modem, my connection was not the greatest. So I converted our phone jack to 1Gb connection. (Our house phone lines were wired with CAT5e). Now I got nice and fast and reliable speeds.
